INSTALLATION VIEW
THE QUALITY OF PHANTASM EXISTS IN BOTH MEMORY AND GHOSTLY THINGS. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE THE PHANTASMIC FEELING WITH A SINGLE TERM, BUT SINCE IT IS NOT VISIBLE AND CANNOT BE CAPTURED IN A FEW WORDS, I BORROW THE TERM GHOST. MEMORY HAS GHOSTLIKE QUALITIES BECAUSE IT IS NOT PER SE MATERIALIZED IN FRONT OF US YET EMANATES SOMETHING DISTINCTLY SENSIBLE. I WANTED TO PRESENT THIS QUALITY IN THE GALLERY. METAPONDS PRODUCES A FEW VERY GHOSTLY EFFECTS: UNREAL AND INHUMAN FIGURES THAT EMERGE THEN DISAPPEAR OR OTHERWISE CHANGE INTO OTHER FORMS. THE MYSTERIOUS ATMOSPHERE TOO COHERES WITH THE IDEA OF THE GHOST. I TRIED TO RETURN TO THE QUESTION OF MEMORY AND HOW MEMORY LIVES IN TIME. BUT PHANTASM IS POWERFUL AND IT INFLECTED MY POETIC MANNER OF DESCRIBING MEMORY TOWARDS THE PHANTASMAL, TURNING MEMORIES INTO PHANTASMIC VIRTUAL THINGS: PHYSICAL BODIES (OF THE SCULPTURES) DEMATERIALIZED THROUGH TIME AND DE-FORMED, BECOMING SENSATION EMANATING FROM AN AMORPHOUS, UNKNOWN BUT BEAUTIFUL ATMOSPHERE. I HAD HOPED IN THIS WORK TO PRESENT THE INVISIBLE EXCHANGE BETWEEN ITS OBJECTS AND ATMOSPHERE, THEREBY FLIPPING MEMORY TO PHANTASM AND VICE VERSA. WHAT I GOT WAS INDEED SOMETHING MYSTERIOUS, A MEDITATION ON MEMORY AND PHANTASM ACTED OUT IN THE CRYPTIC LANGUAGE OF EVEN MORE CRYPTIC FIGURES.
