2019 MYERS ART PRIZE

FOR MY VIDEO, "POETIC HOME," I WAS INSPIRED BY MARCEL PROUST’S NOVEL, "REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST." IN HIS NOVEL, HE FAMOUSLY DESCRIBES HOW, WHILE EATING TEA-SOAKED CAKE AND RECALLING EATING SIMILAR TEA-SOAKED CAKE AS A CHILD WITH HIS AUNT, HIS CHILDHOOD ALL AT ONCE AND IRRESISTIBLY CAME RUSHING INTO THE PRESENT (MACE, 2007). A MYSTERIOUS PHENOMENON INDEED—AND EXEMPLARY IN WESTERN LITERATURE—YET ONE WHICH IN ESSENCE HAPPENS ALL THE TIME IN OUR DAILY LIVES.

MY WORK OFTEN USES MEMORY TO EXPLORE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. IN MY RECENT WORK, "POETIC HOME," I WAS INTERESTED IN PRODUCING MYSTERIOUSNESS AND CELEBRATING THE FEELING OF MEMORY SHARING SCENES FROM MY DAILY LIFE IN THE PAST, SUCH AS COOKING AND DRIVING (WITH STREET VIEW). THE WINDOW SHAPE OF THE VIDEO REPRESENTS A CONTEMPLATIVE PLACE, WHICH MAKES US PULL THE LARGER AREA OF THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT ATTENTION. AS A METAPHOR, THE WINDOW BECOMES BOTH A PLACE AND A MOMENT BLURRING THE PAST AND THE PRESENT.

IN FACT, IMAGES OF THE PAST OFTEN COME TO US SO FREELY AND NATURALLY AS TO RAISE NO SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS NOR AWARENESS OF HOW WE REMEMBER THINGS. I WANTED TO ADDRESS THIS THROUGH MY VIDEO ANIMATION, AND PROCEEDS – IN MY INTENTION, AT LEAST—TO SHOW THE PROCESS OF MEMORY POETICALLY THROUGH ITS CHANGES: THE IMAGE FROM MEMORY CHANGING FROM THE ACTUAL LOCATION TO ANOTHER, AND TO ANOTHER PLACE ENTIRELY, AND CHANGING INTO ATMOSPHERE, AND INTO ANOTHER LIVING FORM, AND SO ON.
